You've read the books.

The one about influence. The one about confidence. The one with the highlighted chapter on first impressions. You've listened to the podcasts on your commute and saved the videos. Your notes app is full of quotes that felt like breakthroughs when you wrote them down.

Every Monday you walk in ready to be different. By Friday, things are more or less where they were. You still get talked over. You still hear about the opportunity after someone else got it. You still leave the room wondering how you came across.

Keisha made the best cake in town, and nobody ordered it. Everything changed in a kitchen doorway, when a stranger asked, "Why have I never heard of you?"

Luis froze in front of leadership. Everything changed on the loading dock, when Dee told him, "You came across like you were apologizing for it."

Sam was double-checked by an outside consultant. Everything changed in a parking garage, when that consultant told him, "They've just never seen your skills."

Not one of them changed who they were. Each of them finally saw how people perceived them. Once they could see it, their confidence, credibility, influence and opportunities followed.

Every one of them had someone who told them the truth. That was the lucky part.

Most people never get a Ruth

Here's what makes those stories hard to read: every one of them depended on luck. A kind colleague who spoke up. A tipsy coworker at a bar. A stranger who happened to eat a cupcake.

Three things to notice this week

You don't have to wait to start paying attention. These three small things will give you a glimpse of how people perceive you. They won't give you the whole picture, but they'll show you there's something there to see.

1. Notice what people come to you for. Is it answers, help, advice or direction? The kind of question people bring you says a lot about how they see you.
2. Notice what happens right after you speak. Do people build on what you said, or move past it? That moment is a small window into your influence.
3. Notice where your name comes up. Are you mentioned when opportunities appear, or only when something needs fixing?

If what you notice surprises you, or if you can't tell at all, that's exactly what the assessment is for.
