GRAVITY SPHERE ANSWERS · PERCEPTION

Why do people belittle me?

Being belittled says more about how someone has placed you than about who you are. People tend to talk down to those they have decided, often unfairly, are below them in standing. You don’t have to accept it, and the way others treat you can change.

What’s usually going on

Belittling usually follows a quick, private ranking: who has standing here, and who doesn’t. Being newer, quieter, younger or more accommodating can all land you lower in that ranking than you deserve.

It continues when it costs nothing. If a dismissive comment passes without any response, the person learns it is safe to repeat.

Sometimes it isn’t about you at all. Some people belittle others to feel bigger themselves, and no change on your part will fully fix that.

What you can do

  1. Respond calmly and directly in the moment: “I’d like to finish my point.” Calm is more powerful than heat.
  2. Name the pattern privately with the person if it continues, using a specific example.
  3. Build standing in the eyes of others. Being visibly trusted by people they respect changes how they treat you.
  4. If it is persistent, targeted or humiliating, treat it as mistreatment and talk to someone who can act on it, such as a manager or HR.
